Elizabeth II Effigy
Reverse
Crown above two oval shields.
By 1760, the French had surrendered Montreal to the British. French officials, aristocrats and soldiers were among those exiled back to France. With them, they took any wealth they had amassed in what is now Canada. Chevalier Luc De La Corne was one of the richest men in Canada at that time, but when fleeing to France with his family and crew, his ship crashed on Cape Breton Island and all his wealth (including hordes of coins) were lost for centuries.
In 1977 part of the wreck was found, including several coins. But to this day investigators had yet to find the stern, where most of the treasure is believed to have been hidden.
