Above there is the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine with the semicircular legend НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine); in the center there is a composition whose constituents mirror the scientist's view of life: the terrestrial globe, crystal lattice of silicon, human figurine and burst of light symbolizing the new life birth; below there are the coin face value П'ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (five hryvnias) and issue year indication 2013.

Reverse

In the foreground to the right there is a portrait of Volodymyr Ivanovych Vernadsky; to the left above there is depicted the terrestrial globe with the scholar's dictum 'ЦАРСТВО МОЇХ ІДЕЙ ПОПЕРЕДУ' (The realm of my ideas is yet to come) and his years of life 1863/1945 thereunder; below there is the inscription В. І. ВЕРНАДСЬКИЙ (V.I.Vernadsky).
