Obverse
On the obverse of the coin there are: the Small Coat of Arms of Ukraine in the centre and the cruciform image of rushnyks (Ukrainian embroidered decorative towels); between the rushnyks there are portraits of the most outstanding personalities of different epochs of our history together with the legends: ЯРОСЛАВ МУДРИЙ, ТАРАС ШЕВЧЕНКО, МИХАЙЛО ГРУШЕВСЬКИЙ, БОГДАН ХМЕЛЬНИЦЬКИЙ; below against the background of a rushnyk there is indicated the coin minting year 2011 and the semicircular inscriptions: НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ (National Bank of Ukraine) (above) and coin denomination (below): П`ЯТДЕСЯТ ГРИВЕНЬ (fifty hryvnias).
Reverse
On the reverse of the 50 hryvnia coin there is depicted a conventionalized wreath of viburnum fruits and leaves together with the legend: 20 РОКІВ НЕЗАЛЕЖНОСТІ УКРАЇНИ 24 СЕРПНЯ 1991 Р. (20 Years of Independence of Ukraine 24 August 1991 year) in the centre thereof.
